What to Expect in the First Week

It’s completely normal for your mesh integration to feel a little snug or like you’re wearing a headband during the first few days. Your scalp is adjusting to the new tension and added volume this sensation should ease within 7 to 10 days.

To help with the adjustment:

  • Avoid tight hairstyles or ponytails in the first 1–2 weeks

  • Keep hair loosely secured when sleeping (a silk bonnet or low braid is best)

  • Be gentle when brushing near the mesh and bead areas

Washing Your Hair

Maintaining a clean scalp and gentle routine is key to the longevity of your mesh system.

How often to wash:

  • Ideally every 3 days. Avoid daily washing, as it can lead to early shedding and reduce the lifespan of your mesh.

Washing tips:

  • Always use cool to lukewarm water. Hot water can loosen the mesh and fade your color.

  • Use professional, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Avoid drugstore brands and clarifying shampoos unless recommended.

  •  When shampooing your mesh system or lace topper, do not scrub. Gently stroke the shampoo downward using a small amount of shampoo. Allow the shampoo to naturally wash down through the extensions rather than scrubbing them to avoid over-washing and drying out the topper and extensions.

  • Do not apply conditioner or oils to the mesh or the roots this can loosen your beads and cause premature shedding. Apply conditioner from mid-shaft to ends only.

  • Rinse very thoroughly. It’s easy for product to get trapped under the mesh, especially early on. I suggest rinsing at least 10 minutes longer than you normally would.

  • If you are washing a clip-in hair topper, it only needs to be washed about once every 3–4 weeks or once a month, depending on how often it is worn. Gently brush it out with a detangling brush, apply a light leave-in conditioner, and allow it to air dry on a mannequin head or a place where it can dry naturally to help maintain its shape.

  • You can follow the same gentle shampoo instructions used for mesh systems or lace toppers, washing with cool to lukewarm water and avoiding direct heat on the roots to prevent shedding.

Drying & Styling

  • Allow your hair to air dry 50–80% before using heat styling tools.

  •  Brush gently using a detangling brush, starting from the ends and working your way up. Do not brush roughly. Avoid applying direct heat to the roots or mesh/topper area, as this can weaken the attachment and cause shedding.

  • If needed, gently blot with a towel, then blow dry on low heat.

  • Always apply a professional heat protectant before blow drying or using hot tools.

  • Avoid high ponytails or pulling styles that may cause tension near the mesh.

  • Stick to soft styling accessories like silk scrunchies and use a satin pillowcase to protect your hair while sleeping.

Brushing & Detangling

  • Use a Wet Brush or detangling brush made for extensions.

  • Brush from ends to roots while supporting your hair to avoid pulling on the mesh.

  • Be sure to gently brush between your natural hair and the topper to prevent tangling and matting at the base.

  • Brush at least twice a day morning and night and any time you wear sweaters, scarves, or high-collar jackets that may rub against the hair.

Scalp Itching or Sensitivity

Mild itching in the first week is common as your scalp adjusts. If you feel irritation:

Check that your mesh isn’t too tight or pulling

Make sure you’ve rinsed your shampoo thoroughly

Avoid using any heavy oils or products at the root
If irritation continues, feel free to reach out so we can make sure everything is settling properly.

Hair Growth & Shedding

Hair naturally sheds in cycles. It’s normal to lose 50–100 hairs a day, even with a topper system in place.
This includes the natural shedding phase (called the exogen phase), where hair detaches and falls out. You may notice hair in the shower or on your brush that’s expected. If shedding becomes excessive or sudden, let me know.

Only use products approved for mesh integration and extensions. I carry salon-grade, sulfate-free lines that are safe and specifically designed for this type of system. Products can be recommended during your appointment or ordered by request for pickup or delivery.

Refit & Maintenance Appointments

Refit & Maintenance Appointments

Your mesh system will need regular maintenance to stay secure and keep your scalp healthy.

Your first follow-up should be 7–10 days after your install to check how your scalp is adjusting and ensure the mesh is settling correctly.

Routine refit appointments are recommended every 4–5 weeks to properly cleanse under the mesh and reposition the system as your natural hair grows.

Waiting longer than 5 weeks between maintenance visits can lead to product build-up, scalp irritation, matting underneath the mesh, or early shedding of the system.
