If you have fine or thinning hair and you’ve been researching extensions, you’ve probably come across the terms beaded row and hidden beaded row and wondered what is the difference, and which one is actually right for me? And then there’s the word “weft” thrown in there too, which can make the whole thing feel even more confusing.

Let me clear it all up for you in plain language, because once you understand how each of these works, it becomes a lot easier to figure out what might be the best fit for your hair.

First — What Is a Weft?

A weft is simply a hair extension. It is a flat panel of hair that has been constructed so it can be attached to your natural hair — not individual strands like K-Tips, but a continuous piece that runs horizontally across a section of your head.

So What Is the Beaded Row Method?

The beaded row method is how the weft gets attached to your natural hair. A row of small silicone-lined beads is created first, running horizontally across a section of your hair. The weft is then sewn on top of that beaded row. The beads sit underneath and the weft lays over them, which is what gives this method its clean, flat result.

Because the foundation is a bead row rather than a braid or glue, there is no heat and no adhesive touching your natural hair at all. It is one of the gentlest professional installation methods available.

When it is time for maintenance, the row can be moved up as your natural hair grows out. Depending on the density of your hair, you may get one to two move ups before a full reinstall is needed. If your hair is very thin, most likely there will be no move up we go straight to a full reinstall each visit to keep things safe and secure on fine strands. Maintenance is every five weeks.

What Is the Hidden Beaded Row?

The hidden beaded row works differently in one key way — the beads are sandwiched in between two wefts of hair, one above and one below, so the beads are completely concealed. With a regular beaded row, the beads sit underneath the weft and can be visible if you lift your hair or wear it up. With the hidden beaded row, there is nothing to see from any angle.

That makes a big difference for women who love wearing their hair back, in a ponytail, or away from their face you don’t have to worry about anyone catching a glimpse of the beads.

Because of how the hair is layered around the beads, this method is not easy to move up. Most of the time, a full reinstall is needed at every maintenance appointment. There may be one move up possible for some clients depending on the density of their hair, but for most, a clean full reinstall is the better and healthier choice.

Which One Is Right for You?

Most clients are a good candidate for the beaded row method, and it is by far the most popular choice. The beads I use are silicone-lined, which means there is a soft silicone layer on the inside of the bead that cushions against the hair and scalp.

However, some people are extremely sensitive to having anything touching their scalp even with silicone-lined beads. Others may have a sensitivity to nickel or metal in general. For those clients, the hidden beaded row can be a better fit because the beads are completely sandwiched between the wefts and never make direct contact with the scalp. It can also be a good choice for anyone who simply does not want to see any beads at all especially around the hairline.

Sometimes the best result actually comes from a combination of both a hybrid install where beaded row is used through the main body of the hair and hidden beaded row is used at the ends of the install for a cleaner, more discreet finish.

The honest answer is that the right method depends on your hair, your scalp, your lifestyle, and what you are hoping to achieve. That is exactly what a consultation is for.

What Clients Notice After Getting Weft Extensions

This is honestly one of my favorite parts of this work seeing a client look in the mirror after their install for the first time.

What they notice right away is that their hair looks fuller. The color blends beautifully. The texture of the hair feels good and moves naturally in the light. But more than any of that they suddenly feel like themselves again. There is this moment when they look in the mirror and something shifts. A confidence comes back that they had been missing. That is the part that never gets old for me.

A Note About the Wefts Themselves

I want to go back to the wefts for a moment because I think this is worth emphasizing. The wefts I use are not the heavy, bulky wefts that some people picture when they think of extensions. They are featherlight. Ultra-thin. They have no stiff return hairs at the top that can scratch or irritate your scalp. They can be cut and customized for your specific head shape and hair density.

For women with fine hair, this is everything. It is the difference between extensions that feel bulky or itchy and extensions that feel comfortable and like your own hair.

Ready to Find Out Which Method Is Right for You?

I offer a free consultation for every new client, and that is where we figure this out together. I look at your hair, we talk about your lifestyle and what you’re hoping for, and I give you my honest recommendation for what I think will work best whether that’s beaded row, hidden beaded row, a hybrid of both, or something else entirely.

I’ve been doing this for twenty years and I specialize exclusively in fine and thinning hair. I understand how personal this is, and I never take that lightly.

If you are in Montgomery County Maryland, Northern Virginia, West Virginia or the surrounding areas I would love to hear from you. I have clients who travel over an hour to see me and I am so grateful for every single one of them.
