How to care for hair extensions fine thinning hair
If you are considering hair extensions for the first time welcome. You are in the right place. Before we talk about the install the color the texture and the transformation I want to make sure you know something that most new clients do not find out until later maintenance is everything. The most beautiful hair extension install in the world will only stay beautiful if you know how to care for it at home and how to stay on schedule with your appointments. I am May and I have spent over 20 years specializing in hair extensions for women with fine and thinning hair. Here is everything I want you to know before you get started.
This is the section I want every new client to read carefully. Understanding what happens when maintenance is skipped is the best way to make sure it never happens to you. When you invest in hair extensions you are investing in your hair health not just your appearance. That investment deserves to be protected. Here is what I want you to know about what happens when extensions are not maintained on schedule. When extensions are left too long they can hang off the scalp like a curtain an inch and a half, sometimes two inches away from where they should be sitting.
The beads become packed with buildup. Shed hair wraps itself around the bonds and tangles deep inside. There is so little natural hair still holding onto those extensions that I cannot safely move them up even if I wanted to. This is not just a cosmetic problem. This is a hair health problem. When extensions are left too long without proper maintenance the shed hair that naturally falls every day gets trapped inside the beads and bonds instead of falling free.
That trapped shed hair wraps around your natural hair and your extensions together. Now you have a small amount of new hair trying to hold up the weight of the extensions plus all that trapped shed hair. That is too much weight on too little hair. And over time that kind of neglect can cause real damage to your natural hair the very hair you are trying to protect and grow. I see this happen to women with fine and thinning hair more than anyone else because their hair is already delicate. They cannot afford to skip appointments.
The margin for error is smaller. When I open those beads on a client who has waited too long I find matted unhealthy hair underneath. The parting has become crosshair meaning the natural hair has been pulled in different directions for so long that it is growing unevenly. At that point a simple move up is not possible.
A full reinstall is required and sometimes the damage to the natural hair takes time to recover from. I always recommend not going past seven weeks no matter what because beyond that point we are no longer just doing maintenance we are doing damage control. I share this not to scare you but because I want you to understand that your maintenance appointment is not optional.
If you are unable to make your four to five week move up appointment a full reinstall is still possible up to six to seven weeks. Seven weeks is the absolute maximum and even at seven weeks the extensions are hanging significantly and putting too much pressure and weight on your natural hair. It is the most important part of wearing hair extensions safely and beautifully especially when your hair is fine and thinning.

The Difference Between a Move Up and a Reinstall
These are two different appointments and understanding the difference matters. A move up is when your extensions are still in good condition, your natural hair is healthy underneath, and we simply tighten and adjust the extensions back up toward the scalp where they belong. Think of it as a tune up. Your extensions are still intact. Your natural hair looks healthy.
There is normal shedding but nothing alarming. We clean everything up and you walk out looking fresh. A reinstall is a fresh start. We take the extensions completely down, assess the health of your natural hair underneath, detangle and treat if needed, and reinstall everything fresh. For K-tip extensions a reinstall means brand new extension hair not the same hair moved around.
That means your K-tips look and feel completely fresh. Soft. Lightweight. Moving like your natural hair. For weft extensions the wefts are reinstalled with fresh placement and proper rotation so your natural hair stays healthy and the extensions sit exactly where they should.
For women with fine and thinning hair the reinstall is especially important because it gives your natural hair a chance to breathe, be assessed, and be treated before new extensions go back in. It also allows me to rotate the placement of the extensions so they are never sitting on the same sections of hair every single time which keeps your natural hair healthier over the long term.
How Often Should You Come In
This depends on the type of extensions you have and the density of your natural hair. For weft extensions you should come in every four to five weeks for a move up. If your hair is medium density meaning not too thin and not too thick you may be able to do one move up at five weeks and after that no more than six weeks before a full reinstall is recommended.
However if you have very soft baby fine hair you may need a reinstall every appointment because your hair simply does not have enough density to hold the extensions through multiple move ups.
For K-tip extensions the schedule is slightly different. K-tip extensions do not require a move up every four to five weeks. Instead a reinstall is recommended every three to three and a half months. Here is why as your natural hair sheds daily that shed hair wraps around the keratin bond and stays there.
Over time there is less and less natural hair holding the extension and more and more shed hair adding unnecessary weight. A reinstall removes all of that, assesses your natural hair, and starts fresh with brand new extension hair. The key with both methods is consistency.
A client who comes in on schedule walks out with a move up or reinstall that takes a normal amount of time. Her hair underneath looks intact and healthy. Her extensions look beautiful. Everything is manageable. A client who waits too long almost always ends up needing a full reinstall regardless of what type of extensions she has and sometimes the condition of her natural hair underneath is concerning enough that we need to have a serious conversation about the health of her hair before we move forward.
Daily Home Maintenance for Weft Extensions
What you do at home every single day matters just as much as your salon appointments. Here is exactly what I want you to do. Brush daily but do it right. Never brush your weft extensions from roots to ends in one stroke. Always start at the ends and work your way up in sections.
This prevents unnecessary tension on the thread that holds your wefts in place. Be thorough when brushing the natural hair in between your extensions that hair needs to be detangled completely. But do not brush at the roots where the thread is attached because this can loosen your extensions over time. Shampoo carefully.
Apply a small amount of shampoo to your roots only and let the lather run down onto the extension hair naturally. Do not scrub the extensions aggressively or pile your hair on top of your head while washing. You want to clean your scalp without over washing and drying out your extension hair. Skip the leave in conditioner on your roots.
Leave in conditioner near your roots can cause your beads to slide and your extensions to loosen. Apply any leave in products to the mid lengths and ends only. No oil on your roots. Oil near the roots of your extensions can cause slipping. Keep oils and serums away from your roots and apply them only to the ends of your hair.
Air dry first. If you have time air dry your hair at least 60 percent before using any heat. When you do use heat apply a heat protector in sections and dry section by section. Avoid direct round brush heat on your extensions as this can shorten their lifespan significantly.
Daily Home Maintenance for K-Tip Extensions
K-tip extensions require a slightly different daily approach because of the keratin bond. Use your fingertips first. Every day separate your K-tip extensions with your fingertips at the bonds. This prevents the bonds from matting together and keeps everything moving freely. Then brush through the bonds.
After separating with your fingertips use a soft brush to brush through the bonds and remove any shed hair that has collected there. Getting that shed hair out daily prevents the buildup that causes problems over time. No heat directly on the bonds. Never apply direct heat to your K-tip bonds.
This can cause the keratin to soften and the extensions to slip out. Always keep your heat tools away from the bond area. No oil on the roots. Just like weft extensions oil near your K-tip bonds can cause slipping. Keep oils away from your roots entirely. No leave in conditioner on the roots.
Same rule applies leave in products near the bonds can cause slipping. Mid lengths and ends only. Air dry and protect. Air dry at least 60 percent before using heat. Always use a heat protector applied in sections and avoid direct round brush heat on the bonds. When choosing hair products for your extensions always use sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. Sulfate free products are gentler on your extension hair and help them last longer and stay soft between appointments.
I carry professional hair products at my hair studio that I personally recommend to all of my clients to keep their extensions looking and feeling their best. I am also a big believer in heat protection and a good conditioner these two products alone can make a significant difference in the health and longevity of your extensions.
A Special Note for Wavy and Curly Hair
If you have naturally wavy or curly hair you may have been told that extensions will never work for you. I want you to know that is not true it just requires a specialist who understands your curl pattern and knows how to customize your extensions to match it.
The K-tip extensions I offer for wavy and curly hair are customized in texture and curl pattern to match your natural wave. They are installed with enough space from the scalp to give your curl the movement and flexibility it needs. When you run your fingers through your hair it moves. It is shakable.
It does not feel stiff or heavy or fake. It feels like your hair just fuller and more beautiful. I also offer mini weft extensions split into two rows for wavy and curly clients which gives the scalp more flexibility and comfort and allows the curl pattern to move naturally without restriction. For wavy and curly hair daily maintenance is especially important. Separating your extensions with your fingertips daily and keeping the bonds free of shed hair will keep your curl pattern looking natural and beautiful between appointments.
What a Fresh Reinstall Feels Like
I want to end with this because I think it is important for you to know what you are working toward every time you come in for your appointment. When a client sits down after a proper reinstall with brand new extension hair she touches her hair and it feels soft. Lightweight. It moves like her natural hair. When she looks in the mirror she sees a complete look healthy, full, and natural. You cannot tell where her hair ends and the extensions begin.
That is what proper maintenance gives you. Not just extensions that last longer. Not just hair that looks better. But hair that feels like yours because it has been cared for the way it deserves to be cared for. The hair extensions I use for my clients are May Lux hair extensions my own professional hair extension line that I created specifically for women with fine and thinning hair.
Every set is customized to match your natural hair texture, density, and color so that the blend is seamless and natural. With proper care and maintenance May Lux hair extensions can last six to seven months and sometimes even longer. When the time comes to replace them we assess your natural hair and start fresh with a new customized set because your hair changes over time and your extensions should always be matched to where your hair is right now.
